Winchester Cathedral Guild of Broderers

A chance to meet some of the incredible and dedicated people using heritage crafts within Winchester Cathedral.

Winchester Broderers Group commenced in 2010 since when we have worked on many projects including repairs, restoration and new items. Our first project was to design and stitch eight kneelers for the High Altar Sanctuary and a throw for St Swithun’s Memorial. One of our most recent projects has been the restoration of the Quire cushions that were designed by Louisa Pesel and Sybil Blunt in the 1930’s and are unique in their use of stitches. These are the cushions that inspired a recent book by Tracy Chevalier. Over the last 15 years our projects include designing and stitching new banners, pulpit and lecturn falls and a new Altar Frontal for the Epiphany Chapel. Our most recent project is a Dorsal to hang behind the High Altar.

We are currently working on the National project ‘A Circle of Life’, representing The Worshipful Company of Upholders’ 400th anniversary which will be touring the participating Cathedrals once it is completed. Due to the hard work and expertise of our team our Cathedral now has textiles that are in a good working order and should last for many more years to come.
